We all know that Father’s Day rolls around every June, but is it still as popular?

Thinking about this, we’ve decided to do some delving into dad data to find out if the day that celebrates fathers is on people’s minds or not this year. The data seems to show that interest in the annual day might be slipping.

Director at GiftsOnline4U, Asgar Dungarwalla, said: “With Mother’s Day having been and gone this year and with UK sales for Father’s Day standing at around an estimated £986 million (according to Statista), we wanted to see just how much people are thinking about Father’s Day.

“After all, we don’t want to forget dads and it’s a great occasion to celebrate and show how much you care.”

We have therefore delved into the data to find out whether the day is as popular and the results are fascinating. By looking into search volumes for key terms around Father’s Day, there are a few notable findings:

Search trends between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day:

Comparing Mother’s Day with Father’s Day, the average monthly search volume for the term ‘mothers day gifts’ (30,000) is approximately 66.66% or 1.66 times higher than that of ‘fathers day gifts’, which stands at 18,000.

Popularity waning?

Asgar added: “What is most interesting and perhaps concerning for dads of all ages is that  when looking at  March 2023 (236,464) and March 2024 (252,284), the actual search volume for “mothers day gifts” increased by 6.69%.

Whereas when comparing similar data from June 2022 (183,481) with June 2023 (155,323), the actual search volume for “fathers day gifts” decreased by 15.35%. It shows that there has been a significant dip and it may be very interesting to see what happens for 2024.

Timing of the peaks

Timing is everything of course, with Mother’s Day falling in March and Father’s Day just on the horizon in June.

As you might expect, the search volume for ‘mothers day gifts’ peaks in March, while “fathers day gifts’ peak in June.

The figures stand at:

  • In March ‘24 the actual search volume for ‘mothers day gifts’ stood at 252,284.

  • In June 2023 the actual search volume for ‘fathers day gifts’ stood at 155,323.

Timing of the peaks

Asgar continues: “As a dad, this data seems concerning as it seems the popularity of Father’s Day is decreasing in general. Factors could include the cost of living crisis and people wanting to spend less.

“However, you have to ask, are we too difficult to buy for? Is there a reason we’re seeing this dip? Do dads have everything? If that’s the case, then what do you buy the man who has everything?”
